Miss World: Huong Giang ranks second in Top Model competition

Vietnam’s representative at the Miss World 2009 pageant in South Africa ranked only behind Miss Mexico in the Top Model competition on November 28.

Top Model is a favorite part of the Miss World pageant. This year, contestants modeled 112 costumes of local designers.

The top five models include contestants from Mexico, Vietnam, Martinique, France and Barbados.

Several days ago, Vietnam’s Huong Giang placed in the top 15 of the Beach Beauty competition.

There are 112 contestants at the Miss World 2009 pageant. The swimwear competition took place in Durban city on November 25, with the attendance of South Africa’s first lady.

The finale will be held on December 12 in Johannesburg.

Vietnam wins two prizes at Miss ASEAN Television Charm

Jonavi Raisa Quiray of the Philippines won the ASEAN Television Charm contest for television hostesses on the night of March night in HCM City.

Second place was taken by Miss Bali 2009, Data Sili Pertiwi of Indonesia, while Vietnamese cai luong (reformed opera) actress, Que Tran, came in third.

Sixteen women including editors, MCs, reporters and performers working for TV stations in Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Brunei, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam competed in the contest that opened on March 17.

The competitors had to perform in traditional ao dai (Vietnamese long dress) and western-style evening gowns during the second and last shows. They also took part in a talent competition during the contest.

The event, organised by HCM Television and the Cat Tien Sa Company, aimed to help female media professionals in Southeast Asia meet and exchange experiences and promote understanding among ASEAN countries.

Vietnam’s Que Tran won “The People’s Choice” title and was second runner-up.

The first prize went to Jonavi Raisa B.Quiray from the Philippines. She also won the “Best in Ao dai” award.

Huong Giang in top three “Sexiest Woman Alive”

The Vietnamese contestant at Miss World, Huong Giang, has been ranked third in the “Sexiest Woman Alive” selection held by the Global Beauties website.

Leah Marville, the Barbados competitor at Miss World 2009 pageant, is the winner in the selection, followed by Sandra Seifert, the Philippines’ representative at Miss Earth 2009 pageant then Vietnam’s Tran Thi Huong Giang.

With a height of 1.8m, 86-61-92, Huong Giang is considered the most impressive contestant from Vietnam at an international beauty contest to date. She ranked 12th in the Beach Beauty competition, second at the Top Model competition and 16th at the finals of Miss World 2009.

The “Sexiest Woman Alive” is an annual poll by Global Beauties for contestants of the five biggest beauty pageants in the world: Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss Earth, Miss International and Miss Tourism Queen International. Of 440 participants in 2009, Global Beauties chose its top 20, top ten and finally top three beauties.

Last year the winner was Iryna Zhuravska from the Ukraine.

Huong Giang voted sexiest on Global Beauties

Vietnam’s representative at Miss World 2009 pageant Huong Giang has been voted as the sexiest contestant by readers of the world prestigious website on beauty, Global Beauties.

With 26 percent of the 12,000 ballots, Huong Giang won the “Sexiest by Popular Demand” title. She also entered the top ten sexiest girls 2009 of Global Beauties, selected by the jury.

Experts will also chose seven beauties representing seven regions of the world.

Vietnamese lacquerware history

The art of lacquerware (nghề sơn mài) as a means of decorating objects was probably introduced from China during the first century CE. The lacquer itself is actually the resin of a tree which is mixed with coloured pigments and solvents and applied layer after layer to the object's surface, producing a shiny and durable finish. Other substances, such as eggshell and gold leaf, may be applied to the surface before the lacquer is applied, in which case the finished product is sanded down to reveal the decoration beneath. The high quality of resin from Vietnamese lacquer trees, notably those of Phú Thọ in the north, was a crucial factor in the rapid development of this art form, which became very popular at the court of Đại Việt during the feudal period. Decorated lacquer statues, panels, boxes and trays, some dating back to the Lê era (1428-1527), may still be seen at many temples and pagodas throughout the country.
In subsequent centuries the use of lacquerware was extended to larger items such as wooden chairs and tables, decorated with engraved, painted or inlaid mother-of-pearl (khảm xà cừ) designs. By the 18th century important centres for lacquerware production in the north included Nam Ngư (Hà Nội) and Bình Vọng (Hà Tây) in the north and Thủ Dầu Một (Bình Dương Province) in the south.
As part of their strategy to open up Vietnamese handicrafts to new foreign markets, the French introduced formal training programmes in lacquerware at the Thủ Dầu Một School of Indigenous Arts (Trường Mỹ nghệ Bản xứ Thủ Dầu Một, now the Bình Dương Secondary Technical School) near Sài Gòn from 1901 and at the École supérieure des beaux-arts de l'Indochine (Trường Cao đẳng Mỹ thuật Đông Dương) in Hà Nội from 1930. It was the creativity of staff and students of the latter institution that led to the birth to a new hybrid form, Vietnamese lacquer painting (for more details see Contemporary art below).
